Late nights and wine

Autumn gut reset: bouncing back after a summer of wine, holidays & late nights

Summer has a habit of throwing your routine (and your gut) completely off course (especially if you didn’t heed the advice in July's post!). More wine, more ice cream, more “I’m on holiday, it doesn’t count” meals, late nights and less sleep – it all adds up.

If you’re heading into September feeling bloated, sluggish or just not quite yourself, you’re not alone. Around 1 in 5 of us experience ongoing digestive symptoms, and if you’re in perimenopause, your fluctuating hormones can make your gut even more sensitive to these summer wobbles.

The good news? Autumn – with its “back to school” vibe – is the perfect time for a gut reset – no extreme detoxes or juice cleanses required.

Signs your gut might need a little TLC

You might recognise a few of these:

  • Bloating, especially after meals
  • Feeling sluggish or low on energy
  • Irregular bowel habits (too loose, too few or generally unpredictable)
  • Sugar cravings that won’t quieten down
  • Daily alcohol intake
  • Skin looking dull or prone to breakouts
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

Why your gut might be struggling right now

There’s rarely just one cause.

A summer of irregular eating, more alcohol, disrupted sleep and travel can shift the balance of bacteria in your gut. Add in your perimenopause hormones – which may affect digestion, gut motility and even how you tolerate certain foods – then it’s not surprising you might be feeling “off” after the holidays.

No need to panic – with some simple tweaks and the right support you can help reduce your symptoms and get your gut back on track

6 simple steps to kick start your autumn gut reset

Healthy fibre - gut reset
1. Focus on routine not restriction

Regular mealtimes help your gut find its rhythm again. Aim for 3 meals a day rather than grazing or skipping meals.

2. Build up fibre, gradually

Vegetables, fruit, oats and pulses feed your beneficial gut bacteria. They'll also keep you feeling fuller and stop the mid-afternoon snacking.

If your diet’s been a bit quiet on the fibre front over summer, then build up gradually to avoid extra bloating.

3. Prioritise protein at every meal

This helps keep your blood sugar steady, supports energy levels and will keep those sugar cravings at bay.

4. Add in fermented foods

Live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut or kimchi can help support a healthy gut. Start slowly and build up to 3 tablespoons per day.

5. Get back to a sleep routine

Poor sleep is linked to changes in gut bacteria and can affect food choices the next day. Focus on a consistent bedtime and less screen time in the evening.

6. Move your body daily

A daily walk, especially after meals, supports healthy digestion and may help reduce bloating.  Plus getting outside in the morning helps reset your circadian rhythm.

What if it’s more than just a summer wobble?

For many people digestive symptoms are more persistent and might point to something deeper – dysbiosis (an imbalance in your gut bacteria), low stomach acid, inflammation, stress or a nutrient deficiency. This is where functional testing can be helpful as it takes out the guesswork of what’s actually going on.

If your GP has told you everything is “normal” or that it’s “just IBS” but you still don’t feel like yourself, then that’s where working with a nutritional therapist can help – to get to the root cause of your symptoms rather than just managing them.

You can find out more about common symptoms associated with IBS here.
